| Aroldo Overture
Composer: G Verdi Arranger: R Newsome Level: Category: Concert Item Instrumentation: Brass Band Format: Sheet Music
Reviewed by Dr Robert Childs for British Bandsman (28 May 2005), he said "... in transcribing this substantial orchestral work, Dr Roy Newsome has managed to make it playable, yet keep the excitement and drama of the original. The work was originally written between Sicilian Vespers and The Force of Destiny and has many of the traits of both works. In these days where orchestral transcriptions are in vogue, you needn't look any further for quality and high fidelity than the pen of Dr Roy Newsome".

| Lord Dunsany, The King of Elfland's Daughter - Parts Only
Composer: Rodney Newton Arranger: Level: 1st Section Category: Test Piece (Nationals 2004) Instrumentation: Brass Band Format: Sheet Music
PARTS ONLY A symphonic poem based on the writing of Lord Dunsany, The King of Elfland's Daughter. Lord Dunsany's fantasy stories influenced many authors and Rodney Newton's evocation was commissioned by Dr. Robert Childs for the Buy As You View Cory Band to première in January this year at the Royal Northern College of Music's Festival of Brass in Manchester. The music is woven around the heroic Prince Alveric and Lirazel, the Elf King's daughter, who fall in love and, after many trials and tribulations, live happily ever after. Reviewing the première, John Bennett wrote: Like all good fairy stories, this work has a happy ending and Rodney Newton has used his considerable talents to create a wonderful atmosphere. This is a difficult piece of music, but I'm sure it will often be used as a concert item in the future.' This is a descriptive work which, with its technical demands and massive ensemble chords, will be an excellent test whilst also being very listenable from an audience's point of view.'
